CHAPTER 27

Jacob Sawyer fidgeted in his chair. ‘You show the signs of a troubled man Sawyer. I’m a good listener; want to try me?’ Danieli said with genuine concern.

Jacob couldn’t keep up the charade any longer. ‘I don’t feel good about this deal. I’m having trouble with the whole idea of ripping off the Australian people.’  His face reddened, ‘I used to be a pretty straight sort of guy. I’ve gotten into something that’s way over my head and I don’t know how to get out.’ He starred at Travioli. ‘And shit man, I don’t know why I’m telling you this. You’re the crook who’s going to make the scheme work.’

Danieli said nothing. He studied Sawyer hard, trying to decide if Jacob was serious or if Bellingham had sent him to test his loyalty.  Was Sawyer baiting him to find out if the Travoili group had any hidden agendas, or did Bellingham suspect he was going to sell him out?  He knew he had to tread carefully. ‘So you just found the conscience you misplaced somewhere, and now guilt’s got you strung out?’

‘Maybe. Look Travoili, I don’t like the deal and I’m not sure I want to be part of it.’

‘What’s your boss got to say about your choir boy conversion?’

‘He doesn’t know I’m here.’

‘So why are you here? Surely you didn’t drive all the way over here just to ask me the name of a good priest who’ll hear your confession.’

‘I came to get you to sign an agreement.’

‘What bloody agreement is that?’

‘The one that says you expect a thirty percent cut of the profits.’

‘No way buddy. This deal is a verbal only. You tell your over-fed boss, if he wants an agreement, then he’s working with the wrong developer. Tell him to find someone else to do his dirty work.’ Danieli stood up and pointed to the door. ‘Sorry you’ve had a wasted trip.’

‘Wait. Please listen to me.’

Danieli scowled, ‘I’ve got more important things to do than to sit here listening to this crap.’ He said and left the room.
